CLIVE MATSON'S BIOGRAPHY

Clive Matson (MFA Columbia University) has published poetry since 1964. Mostly he writes from the itch in his body. Impulse and strong feeling, a signature of hip writers of the 1960s, drew him to New York City. Herbert Huncke became his guide, and Diane di Prima published his first book, Mainline to the Heart (1966), scheduled for re-release in 2009.

He has taught more than 2,000 workshops nationwide, and his how-to book Let the Crazy Child Write! (New World Library, 1998), honoring the creative unconscious, is being used by a number of groups around the world.

His seventh book, Squish Boots, was placed, amazingly, in the coffin of his mentor, John Wieners.

The insight on how unconscious processes are fundamental to creative writing supplied the impetus for the nonprofit www.WorldSwell.org. 9/11 gave signature examples, with Towers Down (2002) rising as an inescapable fountain through Matson’s body. The late Allen Cohen realized many people were having a similar experience, and together with Matson edited the anthology An Eye for An Eye Makes the Whole World Blind – Poets on 9/11 (Regent Press, 2002), which won the 2003 PEN Oakland Josephine Miles National Literary Award.

His new book is Chalcedony's First Ten Songs. "Extravagant, rich and powerful - these poems are a vibrant call to body and spirit and earth through the sensory world. It's as if Clive Matson's early voice lost its anger and returns to embrace sensual life in all its joys and pains."

He likes playing table tennis, basketball, and collecting minerals in the field. He lives in Oakland, California, where poet Gail Ford shares the parenting of their eleven-year-old son, Ezra.

JIN SHIN JYUTSU

This ancient Japanese art of circulatory reawakening is also called the Art of happiness, longevity and compassion. With the hands placed on specific locations of the body over clothing, vitality is restored to harmonize ones' whole being. The stimulation of energetic pathways in the body enliven its natural healing response, enhancing breath, blood, lymph and nerve flow and an increased sense of well-being. By cleansing and rebuilding, more efficient assimilation and elimination of oxygen and nutrients occurs, allowing a deepening of the body?s ability to function on every level. It can be applied by a trained practitioner as well as applied to oneself. This simple healing art is a complement to any other healing modality as well as western medicine as it integrates spirit, mind and body.

Lonner Holden has been practicing and teaching Jin Shin Jyutsu classes for 20 years in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as his homeland of Alaska. He brings his love of the natural world and wilderness into the integration of Jin Shin Jyutsu as a self-care and self-awareness way of life. Lonner also offers classes to athletes, students, artists and writers. He and his wife Jill share their practice and have offices in Marin and San Francisco Counties where they offer private appointments, classes, intensives and retreats.
